A field guide to video

Make videos
people actually finish.

Everything that goes into a YouTube video worth watching — from the first spark of an idea to the final export. No hacks, no hype. Just the craft, broken down step by step.

Great videos aren't an accident. They're a repeatable process — and anyone can learn it.

Behind every channel you love is the same quiet machinery: a sharp idea, a clear story, clean audio, a tight edit, and a thumbnail that earns the click.

This page is that machinery, laid out plainly. Read it top to bottom, or jump to the stage you're stuck on. The goal is simple — give the viewer no reason to leave.

The Process

Five stages, from blank page to publish.

Skip a stage and it shows. Each one quietly sets up the next — and together they're the difference between a video that gets clicked and one that gets watched to the end.

01Pre-production

Win the idea first

Before you touch a camera, win the idea. The best videos answer a question your viewer already has. Find that question, build a hook you can say in one sentence, then outline the few beats that pay it off.

  • Answer a real questionSearch your topic — what are people actually asking?
  • Write a one-line hookIf you can't summarize it, neither can they.
  • Outline 3–5 beatsA loose map keeps you from rambling.
02Production

Shoot for the edit

Viewers forgive average video. They will not forgive bad audio. Get a dedicated mic, find soft light, frame yourself with a little headroom, and capture more than you think you need — coverage is what saves you later.

  • Audio firstA clip-on mic changes everything.
  • Soft, natural lightFace a window. Avoid harsh overheads.
  • Capture b-rollCutaways give the edit room to breathe.
03Post-production

Build it in the edit

Editing is where the video is really made. Cut the silence, keep the pace moving, let b-roll and motion carry the eye, and tuck music low in the mix to set the energy. Every cut should earn the viewer's next second.

  • Cut ruthlesslyRemove every pause that doesn't serve the story.
  • Match pace to energyFaster for excitement, slower to land a point.
  • Music sets the moodLow in the mix — felt, not heard.
04Packaging

Earn the click

This is what decides whether anyone watches at all. A thumbnail should read in half a second — one clear subject, bold contrast, real emotion. The title makes a promise; the video keeps it. Try a few before you commit.

  • One idea per thumbnailHigh contrast, big subject, clear emotion.
  • Title = a promiseSpecific beats clever. Keep the promise.
  • Test variationsSmall changes, big swings in clicks.
05Growth

Grow on consistency

Channels grow on rhythm and feedback, not luck. Publish on a cadence you can sustain, study your retention graph, and double down on whatever kept people watching. The platform rewards videos that keep viewers around.

  • A sustainable cadenceOne good video weekly beats five rushed ones.
  • Read the retention curveFind where people leave. Fix that next time.
  • Reply earlyYour first comments build your first fans.
